Do you have a shortage of stroke or measuring range, problems with the opening and closing of machine parts or dimensional problems during assembly: which designer has not come across these yet? You can prevent this by carrying out a tolerance analysis beforehand with the aim of setting up the tolerance chain. You will learn how to do this during the Tolerance analysis course.

  • Gain skills needed to analyze tolerance risks
  • Learn to solve tolerance problems in a structural way
  • Evaluate designs from a tolerance management perspective
Anyone who wants to get a better handle on tolerance effects and be able to communicate about them, such as designers, constructors, product or production managers and buyers

About the Tolerance analysis course

Tolerance problems often arise from part size variations, adjustment inaccuracies or varying thermal and mechanical loads. This course teaches you how to solve tolerance problems in a structural way. You will learn to make complex tolerance studies understandable to others and give direction to the design process with respect to tolerance aspects. Finally, you will learn to evaluate a design from a tolerance management perspective. During this course, you will develop the skills needed to analyze tolerance risks. In this way you will increase the quality of designs and prevent tolerance problems in production.

The course has an interactive character. Short theoretical lessons are alternated with exercises and own case studies. Individual experiences, questions and practical examples of the participants are parts of this course.

Program

Introduction, basic concepts, tolerance model

  • What is the critical distance?
  • How does the chain run through the structure?
  • What external factors are important?

Tolerance table

  • Conversion of drawing tolerances
  • Setting up tolerance table

Special cases

  • Backlash
  • Prestressed elements
  • Repeated chains
  • Tolerances in mechanisms

Tolerance diagram

  • More abstract representation of a tolerance chain
  • Combining several chains in one diagram

Risk analysis, theory

  • Process control parameters Cp, Cpk
  • Distributions
  • How to add up tolerances

Risk analysis, continuation: practice mechanical engineering

  • Uncertainty in input variables
  • Different methods of addition
  • When to add quadratically, when not to add

Generating alternatives

  • Reduce tolerances
  • Shorten the tolerance chain
  • Broaden specification

Budgeting

  • Exchange of tolerances and costs within the chain

Your teacher

Geert-Jan Verstralen

The most complex tolerance analysis can be executed with a structural approach. With a good tolerance analysis you increase the quality of your design and you prevent tolerance problems in the production phase. In this course you will learn how to analyse unexpected tolerance problems in existing designs to come up with improvement proposals.
