A cross-border collaboration between TM-solutions and Von Gahlen results in a technical ‘tour de force’.

The challenges:

Ever since its inception in 1973, Von Gahlen has focused on the development and production of hot cells for positron emission tomography (PET) and shielding solutions. Recently, however, the company took a step outside its comfort zone and into a new growth market with the development of the `Open Vial Dose Divider’. This semi-automatic vial dispensing system ensures safe and accurate dispensing of radioactive material in small bottles inside a shielded hot cell. This process requires high precision and is subject to stringent safety regulations.

As software is an important part of the solution, Von Gahlen was on the lookout for a technology partner to develop software for its new application. “Because the product dispensed by the system will be injected into patients, everything had to be track- and traceable”, explains Alex Duiker, Account Manager at Von Gahlen. “Furthermore, the software had to be user-friendly and completely validated for us to guarantee impeccable quality to our customers.”

The T&M solution

After consulting with numerous technology partners, Von Gahlen decided to team up with T&M Solutions for the development of the software side of its new dispenser application. Duiker: “The proximity of the team was, of course, an important aspect. But the experience in writing and validating software and their capacity for thorough testing were decisive.”

The T&M Solutions team developed an application based on LabVIEW that was entirely customized to meet the stringent requirements of both the medical applications. On the one hand, the solution takes care of the entire administration and planning of each batch: which hospital, how much material is expected, … On the other hand, it allows the operator to control the dispenser – which is placed inside a sealed hot cell – entirely via his computer. In case of a mistake, for example, the solution is equipped with a recovery procedure to ensure production continuity.

Because the hardware was developed separately by a third party in Germany, the project required a lot of cross-border collaboration and project management. But the end result makes it all worthwhile: “ We are proud to be part of the development of the Von Gahlen’s Open Vial Dose Divider,” says Jan-Willem Schoenmakers, project manager at T&M Solutions “It was a challenge for everyone involved, but we are able to work together both pleasantly and professionally to create a solution with a lot of potential.”

“Test & Measurement Solutions was the perfect partner for this project: they developed a piece of software that is both user-friendly and validated, thus allowing us to guarantee quality to our customers.” — Alex Duiker, Account Manager at Von Gahlen.
