With AM we try to reduce the need for expensive tooling. The extended possibilities in freedom of design, however, render expertise in the design for additive manufactured parts indispensable. A solid design influences both, part quality and manufacturing costs and thus governs economic viability of this manufacturing technology.

About the course Additive Manufacturing lab experience

In the past 20 years, Additive Manufacturing (AM) of metals such as Powder Bed Laser Fusion (PBLF) has received increasing attention from a largely diversified group of research institutes and industrial end users. After completing the Additive Manufacturing lab experience course you will have a great insight into the production environment of Additive Manufacturing. It is a hands-on training with leading data preparation software solutions. These solutions cover the entire process chain of converting a generated STL file input to the cut supported machine data file. In addition, starting and unpacking a metal Additive Manufacturing process is offered to learn more about the entire workflow of Additive Manufacturing processes. With Additive Manufacturing we try to reduce the need for expensive tools. This course is taught in English.

Day 1: State of the Art Additive Manufacturing and its Materials

  • Introduction of AM technologies and global developments
  • In depth view of most important metal AM processes
  • In depth view of common metal Materials for AM and their mechanical properties
  • Identification of business cases and economic potential for AM

Day 2: Process deep dive and Design for Additive Manufacturing

  • Introduction of most important Process Parameters
  • Understand major process possibilities and restrictions
  • Deducing of Design rules from acquired knowledge
  • Interactive Design study on exemplified part

Day 3: Day at Xilloc (Geleen)

  • Introduction in Polymer AM and its technologies

  • Guided tour through the Xilloc Factory
  • Introduction of post processing possibilities and Quality assurance
  • Understand the cost structure for polymer AM processes
  • Future of Polymer AM processes

Day 4: Software solutions and job preparation

  • Understanding the possibilities and limitations of the STL file format
  • Get to know supporting Design tools: Topology Optimization
  • Hands- On Software Training on market leading Software Magics
  • Prepare individualized part for Lab Day
  • Understand the cost structure for AM processes

Day 5: Lab Day in Aachen

  • Preparing a metal AM job: Do’s and don’ts
  • Start a job with self-prepared parts
  • Guided Lab Tour Aconity3D and Fraunhofer Research Institute
  • Introduction of post processing possibilities and Quality assurance
  • Unpacking your own manufactured part

All participants will be granted a free trial version of Magics 19 and 3-matic STL provided by Materialise over the lengths of the AM Lab Experience training.

Maikel Beerens

CEO, Xilloc Medical B.V

Maikel Beerens, is CEO en oprichter van Xilloc Medical B.V. en heeft een diploma in medische engineering. Voor zijn bachelorscriptie ontwikkelde Maikel een protocol voor het ontwerp, de productie en de marketing van patiëntspecifieke implantaten voor MUMC + en ontving een nationale technologieprijs voor dit proefschrift. Voor de case study, die als leidraad voor zijn proefschrift diende, gebruikte Beerens voor het eerst wereldwijd 3D-printtechnologie voor de productie van een titanium-patiëntspecifiek implantaat. Dit implantaat werd met succes geïmplanteerd en positioneerde de MUMC + op de kaart als een van de pioniersgroepen op dit gebied. Hij werkte ook aan de door de EG gefinancierde 6e kaderprogramma-projecten Custom-Fit en Custom-IMD, waarbij hij nieuwe biomaterialen en additieve productietechnologieën voor patiëntspecifieke implantaten ontwikkelde. In 2016 ontving Maikel aanzienlijke financiering om de grootste professionele 3D-printfabriek van Nederland te starten die 3D-print- en adviesdiensten biedt aan industriële bedrijven in bijvoorbeeld de auto- en ruimtevaartsector.

Tobias Klimkait

Testing Facilities & Consulting, Aconity3D GmbH

Tobias Klimkait studeerde werktuigbouwkunde gericht op medische technologie aan de RWTH University Aachen. Hij werkte bij Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology op het gebied van procesontwikkeling voor additieve productieprocessen van resorbeerbare implantaatmaterialen. Sinds 2016 leidt hij van advies- en testfaciliteiten voor Aconity3D GmbH, die naast advies, materiaaldistributie en implementatie van klantspecifieke Laser Beam Melting-oplossingen on-demand productie van onderdelen biedt. Naast zijn werk in consultancy, is Tobias Klimkait verantwoordelijk voor het beheer van verschillende ontwikkelingsprojecten. De belangrijkste focus van zijn ontwikkelingswerk ligt op de proces- en materiaalontwikkeling voor Laser Beam Melting.
